As day two of 4WD at Yatabe Arena beckons, the rapid development war that we saw at the beginning of the week seems to have tapered off. 4WD appears largely stagnant on the surface.
There really isn’t much to report, other than a few minor changes to the track layout and some general manufacturer notes - it’s all a bit dull. But nevertheless, we shall forge on, and hope things liven up as Qualifying and the Finals take place.
The Serango lives - The Durango that’s clearly not a Durango because it has a Serpent sticker on the side has made another appearance, but this time with some front driveshafts installed. There is continued speculation as to why this is happening, but the initial shock seems to have gone. The Serango is here to stay, by the look of things.
Goodbye 5 Spice - Or, sort of. Whilst the 5 consecutive strips have been removed from the short straight near the end of the track, they’ve just been moved around the corner, so now drivers have to negotiate a corner whilst being violently kicked around in the air. Fun times. Say hello to the Corner Spice!
Tom Cockerill’s YZ-4 livery is nice - I like the splattery thing. More liveries should have a splattery thing.
Cars are running with far too much power - As the track is so fast, and the top of the timesheets are so tight, several drivers are dropping as low as a 4.5T motor to get a slight edge. To put that into context, that’s the maximum motor wind a World Championship winning Touring Car runs.
The Legend of the ‘Ring returns - Bruno Coelho, the driving style of whom divided opinion at the Nuerburgring to say the least, is back up at the sharp end. This alone should make the action a little bit more interesting.
The Top Seed came out of nowhere - Having made no noticeable appearance in 2WD, Yusuke Sugiura then pulled blistering pace out the bag on the first day of 4WD, ensuring he gets the best start possible for Qualifying. His Kyosho also sports some rather fetching orange wheels, too.
That’s all that can really be said for the first day of 4WD. Everything seems very calm, despite the times being so close. Let’s see how Friday pans out.

I remember following RC buggy racing back when the B4 was dominating.

2WD has escaped that period of manufacturer dominance, thankfully. It’s a tough fight in both categories. Cars are becoming stronger, more adjustable and more innovative with each passing year. It really is a booming class.

It does indeed. I’ll start posting my own racing updates at some point.

Something I’ve been curious about is that Yatabe Arena has an indoor dirt track, as someone who’s there do you have any idea why they didn’t use the dirt?

The dirt track was replaced with a permanent astro track, because it was too hard to upkeep properly. Users of the track have multiplied since they made the switch. There had to come a point where an EFRA or IFMAR event moved with the times and ran an artificial track.
I’m not actually in attendance, but I am keeping very close tabs.
